Some breeders may have older dogs available for rehoming. These older dogs may be retired from breeding, returned to the breeder from previous buyers who could no longer care for them, or dogs that a breeder decided weren’t a good fit for their breeding program. While these dogs are beloved members of their family, breeders recognize that they would be better suited for home life as a companion outside of their breeding program.

Finding an older pup can be a great way to welcome home a dog who has likely had some basic training, is potty-trained and has been socialized. Compared to puppies, older dogs may be more relaxed and less energetic. Breeders will likely have more information on an older dog’s personality and can use that information to make sure it’s a great match for you. If you’re not ready to take on puppyhood, an older dog is an excellent option.

The application process for an older dog is similar to the puppy process. You’ll share a little about yourself and what you’re looking for so the breeder can get to know you and see if their dog is the right fit. You can chat with the breeder to learn more about them and their program before moving forward.

When you bring an adult dog home, they may take longer to settle in. This is normal, and after they acclimate to their new home and family, they can make great companions. The breeder you work with can also offer guidance to help your older dog adjust smoothly.
